It was formed in 1840 and organized in 1863.
The county's name was said to be a Native American word meaning "delight of life", but it is a neologism from Indian agent and ethnographer Henry Schoolcraft, who sometimes gave the name "Leelanau" to Native American women in his tales.
Leelanau County is included in the Traverse City Micropolitan Statistical Area of northern Michigan.
