Wayne County Inmate Search

Per the Michigan Compiled Laws Chapter 764.2b, arrests become necessary when a crime occurs, and a law enforcement officer has probable cause to believe a particular person is guilty. Once an individual is arrested, they are taken to a police station or local jail for processing. During the booking process, the arrestee's personal information, fingerprints, and photos will be recorded, and they may be searched for contraband.

Not all inmates in Wayne County, Michigan are the same. Inmates may be classified based on their offense, status, and sentence. The classification system helps determine the level of supervision, housing unit, and programs in which an inmate will participate. The types of inmates in Wayne County include pre-trial detainees, sentenced offenders, and those awaiting transfer to state or federal facilities. Information regarding inmates in the county is maintained and disseminated through Wayne County Public Record databases.

In Wayne County, inmates are typically held in various county facilities, depending on their status. Pre-trial detainees are usually held in the Wayne County Jail, while sentenced offenders may be housed in different facilities, including the Detroit Detention Center, the Andrew C. Baird Detention Facility, and the William Dickerson Detention Facility. Individuals can look up Wayne County inmates by contacting the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

At the same time, an inmate could be sent to a state prison (usually for serious offenders). The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) runs the Michigan prison system. MDOC is responsible for managing the state's correctional facilities, including those located in Wayne County. The agency ensures the safety and security of inmates, staff, and the public while providing rehabilitation programs and services to help inmates successfully re-enter society upon release.

Inmate records are considered public in the United States and therefore are made available by both traditional governmental agencies as well as third-party websites and organizations. Third-party websites may offer an easier means to search, as these services do not face geographical limitations. However, because third-party sites are not government-sponsored, the information obtained through them may vary from official channels. To find inmate records using third-party aggregate sites, requesting parties must provide:

  • The location of the sought-after record, including state, county, and city where the inmate resides.
  • The name of the person listed in the record, unless it is a juvenile.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office provides an online inmate search tool that can be accessed through their website. To use this tool, users must enter an inmate's name, global subject number, booking date, and booking number. The search results will display the inmate's recorded information.

In addition to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office inmate search tool, the Michigan Department of Corrections also provides an online offender search tool that allows users to search for individuals currently incarcerated in Michigan state prisons. This tool requires the inmate's last name and first initial or Michigan Department of Corrections number to bring up results. The available information through the DOC database includes the inmate's name, prisoner number, location, date of birth, gender, race, and custody status. It may also include information about the inmate's crime, sentence length, and parole eligibility date.

For individuals who are incarcerated in federal prisons, the Federal Bureau of Prisons provides an online inmate locator tool that can be used to obtain information on federal inmates. This tool requires the inmate's first and last name or the Federal Bureau of Prisons register number.

Alternatively, third-party inmate locators are also available online, although these sites may charge a fee for access. The service provider accepts deposits online with a credit or debit card, and the funds are typically available to the inmate within 24 to 48 hours.

How to Visit a Wayne County Inmate

Visiting an inmate in Wayne County requires one to meet specific requirements and follow certain steps. The steps ensure that the visitation process runs smoothly for the inmate and visitor.

Visits at the Wayne County jail are divided into personal and professional visits. Personal visits are only available from Monday through Friday during three-time slots. On the other hand, professional visits are allowed seven days a week during scheduled visiting hours, and the attorneys are provided visitation during day, evening, and weekend hours. Individuals aged 17 years and above with a valid identification card or driver's license are allowed a 30-minute visit per week on assigned days. Meanwhile, minors younger than 17 can visit the lobby with an authorized adult supervisor. Inmate workers in the New Jail, Division I, can receive visits on Saturdays, according to regular visiting hours. The rest of the inmates, including inmate workers in the Old Jail, Division II, receive visitors based on the first initial of the inmate's last name on assigned days and time slots.

All inmates are allowed one non-contact 30-minute visit per week with family and friends. However, a particular visit may not be permitted if it disrupts normal jail operations or poses a clear and present danger to the facility's safety and security. During scheduled visiting hours, limited contact visitation is available for attorneys, their designees, approved clergy, and staff social workers. Command staff may approve special visits or exemptions following the established procedure.

A Wayne County inmate must schedule their visit no later than the day before the intended visiting date. The officer on the housing unit will enter the inmate's visiting list into IMS and schedule the visit in IMS. When persons are scheduled to visit an inmate, they must report to the lobby desk with valid picture identification, such as a Michigan state ID or driver's license, except for professional visitors. Professional visitors, such as attorneys, must present a valid bar card with a "p-number" and valid identification (state ID card or driver's license). The HRMN on the pictured identification card must be recorded behind the visitor pass for probation and parole agents.

Visitors will also be checked to ensure no court orders prohibit contact between the inmate and the visitor. Visitors with court orders banning contact or warrants are turned away or subject to arrest or refusal of visit. Officers will check the inmate's scheduled visiting days and verify that the inmate scheduled the visitor for a visit. Officers will hold onto the ID presented by the visitor until the visit ends, write the visiting booth on a visit pass, and give the pass to the visitor. A visitor pass is not issued to a visitor attempting to visit an inmate more than once in the same week.

No more than two visitors for one inmate are allowed to visit simultaneously. Visitors sit in the waiting area until called to start the visit. Visitors are allowed only one visit with the same inmate per visiting week. All visitors are screened for contraband based on reasonable suspicion, and any search performed by means other than the magnetometer must be documented.

All visitors must check their items upon entering the jail facility. Phones, pagers, and other electronic devices are prohibited except for legal correspondence during professional attorney visits. When visitors have completed search procedures, the visiting officer will direct the visitor to the lobby waiting area. Professional visits take place at the professional visiting booth behind the front desk. Visitors must comply with the dress code available on the Wayne County Sheriff's website.
