The Michigan State Police provides crime statistics for Midland County as well as other counties in the state. In 2018, the county had a total of 106 violent crimes and 503 property crimes. These include 1 murder, 49 sex offenses, 1 robbery, 55 aggravated assaults, 102 burglaries, 373 larcenies, and 28 motor vehicle thefts.

Compared to the county’ 2014 crime figures, 2018 recorded higher incidences of sex offenses (44.1%), aggravated assaults (5.8%), and motor vehicle thefts (7.7%) increased. On the other hand, the five-year crime trend for Midland County also indicates falling robbery (-90%), burglary (-37.8%), larceny (-39.5%), and arson (-100%) rates.

Criminal Records

The Michigan State Police provides online access to criminal history records through its Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT). Register or access the portal as a guest user to search the database by first name, last name, date of birth, race, and gender. The Michigan State Police provides access to registered sex offenders living in the state through the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry. Use the Sex Offender Search to find registered offenders living Midland County. Family and friends may fund an inmate’s account in person or online. To fund an inmate’s account in person, visit the County Jail’s Canteen Kiosk at the facility’s main lobby. The Kiosk accepts credit card and cash payments. To fund an inmate’s account online, use the approved Express Account platform.

The Midland County Jail allows both on-site and video visitations. To schedule a visit, use the Securus Technologies platform. Inmates are allowed one on-site visit per week. On-site visitors must present their photo IDs. The County Jail does not restrict the number of video visits allowed.

Court Records

Midland County has a Circuit Court, a District Court, and a Probate Court. The Circuit Court has general jurisdiction over all cases, except cases which other courts have specific jurisdiction. The Circuit Court also has original jurisdiction over all domestic relations, serious misdemeanor, felony, child abuse, and criminal cases. The Circuit Court’s jurisdiction also extends to civil cases with claims over $25,000.

The District Court has jurisdiction over civil cases with claims of $25,000 or less, traffic violations, civil infractions, landlord/tenant disagreements, and small claims cases worth $5,000 or less.

The Midland County Probate Court hears juvenile cases, probate of wills, administration of estates, incapacitated or mentally ill individuals, and transfer of assets.

Midland County birth certificates are confidential records only available to the persons named on the certificates as well as their parents, legal guardians, and heirs.
