Crime Numbers
In 2017, Genesee County recorded 30,334 crimes, a 24.1% drop in overall crime rate compared to 2013. A breakdown of the county's 2017 crime figures shows that there were 48 murders, 277 rapes, 414 robberies, and 1,645 aggravated assaults. Reported incidences of property crimes include 1,941 burglaries, 3,824 larcenies, 577 motor vehicle thefts, and 75 arsons.
Compared to 2013 figures, rape (42.8%, the definition of the crime was expanded in the intervening years) and aggravated assault (8.9%) were the only crimes to record higher numbers in 2017. The five-year crime trend for Genesee County indicates falling murder (9.4%), robbery (41.5%), burglary (103.2%), larceny (27.5%), motor vehicle theft (18.2%), and arson (50.7%) rates in the same period.
Genesee County Criminal Records
The Michigan State Police offers name-based and fingerprint-based criminal history checks. To conduct a name-based background check, use the search tools on the Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT). Users have to register and log in to use this search portal. Each search costs $10 payable with a Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card.
To obtain a criminal history report based on a fingerprint search, you must mail a request to the Michigan State Police. Requesters that need background checks for employment must obtain Live Scan forms from their employers, complete the middle section, and bring these to approved Live Scan vendors. Live Scan vendors charge varying fees and turnaround is usually within 7 business days.
Those requesting their own criminal histories need to obtain the Michigan Applicant Fingerprint Card (RI-008) from, and ask to be printed by, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office. Out-of-state requesters can use the FBI Application Fingerprint Card (FD-258) as an alternative. Applicants must provide return addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers on their forms. The Michigan State Police charges a processing fee of $30 payable in check or money order made out to the State of Michigan. There is an additional fee of $1 per certified/notarized report requested.
In Michigan, police reports fall under public records and can be requested under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Use the FOIA Request Form to request these records from the Genesee County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office provides accident reports through LexisNexis.
Genesee County Sex Offender Information
The Michigan State Police maintains a statewide database of registered sex offenders. It provides public access to this database and allows anyone to search the Michigan State Sex Offender Registry. To find sex offenders living in Genesee County, search the registry with zip codes and street addresses in the county. You can also search for offenders by name.
Genesee County Inmate Search
The Corrections Division of the Sheriff's Office runs the correctional facilities in Genesee County. These are the Genesee County Jail and the Flint City Lockup. The Genesee County Jail is located at 1002 South Saginaw Street, Flint, MI 48502. Call (810) 257-3426 to enquire about inmate information at either facility. The Flint City Lockup operates out of the Flint City Police Department located at 210 E. Fifth St., Flint, MI 48502.
The public can find inmates incarcerated at both detention facilities using the search function of government-owned or third-party repositories. A Genesee County Inmate Search requires inquirers to furnish the search tool with details of the detainee such as their name, birth date or DOC number (if applicable). To fund an inmate's account, deposit money at the kiosk in the County Jail lobby or do so online using TouchPay.

The 7th Judicial Circuit Court is the highest trial court in Genesee County. It shares the same courthouse with the Genesee County Probate Court. Besides these, there are eight branches of the 67th District Court in Genesee County. The 67th District Court has limited jurisdiction and hears preliminary examinations in felony cases as well as misdemeanor, small claims, and civil cases involving amounts not exceeding $25,000. Its jurisdiction also covers traffic violations and parking citations. Find the records of this court online using JIS Record Check.
