Genesee County Criminal Records

The Michigan State Police offers name-based and fingerprint-based criminal history checks. To conduct a name-based background check, use the search tools on the Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT). Users have to register and log in to use this search portal. Each search costs $10 payable with a Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card.

To obtain a criminal history report based on a fingerprint search, you must mail a request to the Michigan State Police. Requesters that need background checks for employment must obtain Live Scan forms from their employers, complete the middle section, and bring these to approved Live Scan vendors. Live Scan vendors charge varying fees and turnaround is usually within 7 business days.

Those requesting their own criminal histories need to obtain the Michigan Applicant Fingerprint Card (RI-008) from, and ask to be printed by, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office. Out-of-state requesters can use the FBI Application Fingerprint Card (FD-258) as an alternative. Applicants must provide return addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers on their forms. Mail the completed form, along with payment, to:

Michigan State Police
Cashier's Office
P.O. Box 30266
Lansing, MI 48909-7766

The Michigan State Police charges a processing fee of $30 payable in check or money order made out to the State of Michigan. There is an additional fee of $1 per certified/notarized report requested.

In Michigan, police reports fall under public records and can be requested under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Use the FOIA Request Form to request these records from the Genesee County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office provides accident reports through LexisNexis.
